Presentation College Carlow is a co-educational CEIST ethos school in the heart of Carlow Town. The school & staff aim to prepare all  pupils, girls and boys alike for the challenges, responsibilities and experience of adult life. All members of the school community - pupils, parents, teachers and other staff - are held in very high regard and their dignity, worth and individuality is respected.

 

The school strives to build a sense of community based on Christian values. The school’s Code of Conduct acknowledges this and aims to promote a culture of respect throughout the school. It recognises that good discipline enables good teaching and allows good learning to take place. Presentation College is an innovative school drawing on the talents and skills of staff, students and parents, and  wholesome participation is encouraged in the extensive range of extra-curricular activities on offer, and care is also taken to ensure the well-being and happiness of each and every student in the school.

Learner's Work

5th Year Visual Studies

Giotto di Bondone - Proto Renaissance

Aim:

To explore and engage with the work of Giotto de Bondone c.1305, to collaborate, sketch, annotate and produce practical work surrounding our chosen works ‘The Lamentation of Christ’, and ‘The Kiss of Judas'.

Learning Intentions:

  • describe the impact the Catholic Church had on artwork of the time

  •  describe the new innovations Giotto brought about in ‘The Lamentation…’ and highlight the differences between this and early Byzantine art

  • know how a fresco is created, and why Giotto made the change from the secco to buon fresco technique

  • discuss the techniques shown in “The Kiss…”, and be able to compare this fresco to Giotto’s previous work

  • appreciate Giotto’s use of colour, and what each colour signifies within his work and the work of the time

  • ​understand and appreciate Giotto’s inventions and Justify how they play a role in the development of today’s artwork

1st Year Wire Sculptures

"My Favourite Things"

Aim:

Learning Intentions:

Students will explore line, shape and form through observational drawing, wire experimentation, Thumbnail sketching & prototyping to create a wire sculpture influenced by the theme of ‘My Favourite Things’

Learner's Work

  • define the different drawing styles covered in the class

  •  create and record a number of primary source observational drawings in their sketchpads

  •  demonstrate  a variety of wire construction techniques, using their handout as a guide.

  • implement these wire techniques to create a wire version of their name, using the wired alphabet

  • interpret how Alexander Calder uses various wire techniques to join together different elements of his painting

  •  create a thumbnail sketch combining two of their objects together

  •  successfully morph their objects together through thumbnail sketching

  • construct a prototype of their final sculpture, using their thumbnail sketches as a guide

  • begin creating their final sculptures, influenced by their prototypes and thumbnail drawings

  • Interpret a design brief and represent this through their drawings 

  • Design a final work based on their drawings

1st Year Leaf Patterns

"Klimt's Tree"

Aim:

Learning Intentions:


Learning Outcomes:

Students will explore line, shape, colour and pattern through observational drawing, pattern making & watercolour experimentation to create a watercolour leaf, influenced by our theme of  ‘Klimt’s Tree’, and the patterns in the work of Gustav Klimt.

  • Analyse their work, or that of another using appropriate vocabulary & knowledge

  • Respond to an artwork using critical and visual language

  • examine the method of a number of artists and the artwork they created

  • Identify the use of AEDP within an artwork

  • Apply their understanding of AEDP to make an artwork

  • Use Media to create their own artwork

Learner's Work

Art

  • explain the art element of pattern, and relate this explanation back to their own work

  • replicate a series of patterns displayed in the work of Gustav Klimt

  • replicate a series of watercolour techniques successfully, and create the base of their leaf using their favourite

  • Students will be able to successfully create a series of patterns onto their leaf
